Two of the country's biggest bin collection businesses are to merge.

Panda has signed a deal to buy rival Greenstar's refuse collection and processing unit.

The deal does not include Greenstar's landfill power generation assets and is subject to approval by the Irish competition authorities.

The planned tie-up has been notified to the Competition & Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC).

The chief executive of Panda, Brian McCabe, said the deal will  create a leading Irish owned and managed waste collection, processing and recycling business.

"This will enable the combined business to continue to innovate and to deliver better, faster and more competitive waste management and recycling services to both companies’ customers," he said.
