On-trade growth adds fizz to C&C
C&C's Magners cider has returned to growth in the UK, with sales at licensed premises in particular driving growth, according to new data.
The latest Nielsen/CGA data shows that in the four weeks to February 19, Magners on-trade volumes rose 6pc year on year with the 'Golden Draught' brand showing 14pc growth. Packaged and bottled sales grew 4pc and pricing was up 6pc. The market share of Heineken's Bulmers cider, meanwhile, was down 7pc to 53pc.
Davy Stockbrokers' Barry Gallagher said the data was encouraging, noting the current roll-out of Magners Golden Draught in England and Wales.
"The Magners draught brand has 4pc share of the on-trade draught cider category but we note Magners Golden Draught already represents 20pc of C&C's on-trade volumes.
"In 2010, C&C's Great Britain volume growth was driven by the off-trade channel; it is encouraging to see Magners back growing and outperforming in the on-trade," he said.
"The market data suggest that Magners' overall volume is up 6 to 7pc for the year to end-February against a cider market up 3pc."
C&C closed flat at €3.31.
