One man's 'chat' is another man's 'discussion'
WHEN is a high-level meeting not a high-level meeting? When it's just a chat, apparently.
Finance Minister Michael Noonan (below) is known for his laid-back manner.
Although he's been around the political block for a number of years, journalists marvel at his inability to get flustered.
And that manner was in evidence when he talked of having a "general chat" with the other members of the Economic Management Council in advance of the Budget on October 15.
Comprised of the Taoiseach, Tanaiste, Minister Brendan Howlin and Mr Noonan, it's a pretty powerful group and it would be hard to imagine their first discussion about the Budget as being simply a "general chat".
Mr Howlin, who's also pretty experienced on the political beat, was keener to talk the gathering up.
He was of the view that they were "high-level discussions".
Have we a sign of further division between the coalition partners?
