Ninety jobs lost as poultry plant shuts down

Mark O’ Regan

NINETY jobs have been lost following the closure of a poultry plant in Co Cavan.

Co-operative Poultry Products is to close its plant in Cootehill.

Workers were told that the business was to close with immediate effect.

It cited increased feed prices, rising energy costs, poor market prices and low quality imports as its reasons for closure.

“With great regret that we announce that we are left with no alternative other than to request Bank of Ireland to place our business in receivership", a statement on behalf of the company said.

Simon Coyle of Mazars has been appointed as the liquidator for the company.

SIPTU’s Jim Finnegan said the announcement will have a devastating effect on the local community.

“Not only must 90 workers and their families deal with the loss of their livlihoods but more than 25 local growers have also lost their source of income,” he said.
