He's the mystery developer behind the latest London skyscraper but little else is known about Tom Ryan.

It is understood he bought the site for £100m earlier this week in the business district east of the City of London.

The £1bn, 74 storey building will be 242m high,  that's 7m higher than Canary Wharf's tallest office building.

If it gets the green light, the development will be the tallest in London for a residential build.

Mr Ryan, who is also understood to have development interests in the US, already has planning permission for a mixed development on the site but he will have to apply to Tower Hamlets council to allow a housing development instead.

It is believed that he is planning other investments in the London property market.

His company is Ryan Corporation (UK) Ltd, with a London address.
