Musgrave 'stabilises' Superquinn sales

Peter Flanagan

THE new owners of Superquinn said yesterday they had begun to "stabilise" the business, as the company appointed a new boss for the troubled supermarket chain.

Musgrave Group, which also controls the SuperValu and Centra multiples, has created the Musgrave Operating Partners Ireland division to run the Superquinn business.

In a statement, Musgrave said that it appointed the group's former director of group finance and business development, Tim Kenny, as managing director of the new arm with responsibility for "establishing the new division as well as the integration of the Superquinn business into the wider Musgrave Group".

"This new division will allow Musgrave to develop the future Superquinn business while maintaining the existing focus on its other divisions," a company spokesman added.

Mr Kenny will be charged with "developing the business going forward" but there are no plans for job cuts or store closures at the moment.

As agreed at the time of Musgrave's takeover of the business during the summer, Superquinn staff retained all their terms and conditions from their previous employers.
