Mark Fitzgerald steps down as CEO of Sherry Fitzgerald - but will continue as chairman

Mark FitzGerald is stepping down as chief executive of the Sherry FitzGerald Group.

However, the co-founder of Ireland's biggest property agent will be staying on as the group's chairman. 

Mark, who has spent over 40 years in the property industry, founded Sherry FitzGerald with partners in 1982 at the age of 25.

Group Finance Director Steven McKenna is to be assume the CEO position of Sherry FitzGerald from July 1.

Steven (39) joined Sherry FitzGerald Group as Financial Controller of the residential business in 2008 and was promoted to Group Financial Controller two year later.

As Group Finance Director from 2010, Steven has worked very closely with Mark and the management team in re-positioning the company for a recovering economy.

In the last seven years, the Group’s turnover has more than doubled (€37.3m in 2016 compared with €16.3m in 2012) the network has expanded nationwide with offices opened in Blackrock, Rathmines, Sandymount and Sundrive, and acquired offices in Galway, Limerick and Foxrock.

"Steven is a great appointment as he has that unique balance of strategic, operational, and people skills," said Mark FitzGerald of the appointment.

"He is also smart, calm, clear, and a really decent person."

Since the 1990s Mark has pioneered and supported research into the Irish housing market and was instrumental in setting up the Sherry FitzGerald House Price Index in 1996.

In 2001, Mark led the creation of MyHome.ie, which was subsequently sold in 2006.

In 2005, he successfully led the diversification of Sherry FitzGerald into the London residential market through the acquisition of the long-established business of Marsh & Parsons.

Mark is currently a non-executive director of Tedcastle’s and a former chairman of Bord Iascaigh Mhara.

He negotiated the company’s commercial property link with the international firm of DTZ Holdings (now Cushman & Wakefield).

In 2016, the Group successfully rebranded its commercial business to global giants Cushman & Wakefield - a deal Steven McKenna was heavily involved in.

Originally from Galway, Steven is trained and qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant with EY and holds a Masters in Business Practice from UCC.  He is married with two children and living in Dublin.

Sherry FitzGerald Group now employs 388 people, up from 200 people in 2012.
