An overwhelming majority of employers said they would hire a younger person over more a mature applicant.

A total of 70 pc of employers stated that, all things being equal, they would hire a younger model over older age-groups for a job which required 3-5 years experience.

The results back up the bias that many mature job applicants claim to feel when trying to kickstart a new career.

The survey, conducted by the Cpl Employment Market Monitor, also revealed that employers believe their staff spend up to two hours a day browsing their social media websites.

However, 50 pc of their employers allow their staff unrestricted access to sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Eighty pc of employers were optimistic for the coming 12 months saying they are expecting to hire more employees and 53 pc said they are planning to expand their operations.

Overall, industries expecting to grow further in the next 12 months include engineering, IT, banking, sales and marketing.
