'Love/Hate' proves money-spinner for RTE
DVDs of gritty drama 'Love/Hate' have been flying off the shelves, which helped propel RTE's commercial division to a 208pc increase in pre-tax profits to €4m last year, writes Gordon Deegan.
In accounts just filed, RTE Commercial Enterprises Ltd states that "while average sales for merchandising were down compared to 2011, sales of 'Love/Hate' Series 3 and the box set exceeded expectations and performed very strongly in a declining market." Series 4 begins on RTE next month.
Last Christmas, many shops across the country sold out of Series 3. Sales of the DVDs will go some way towards funding future series – each episode costs €600,000 to make.
RTE yesterday declined to reveal the number of 'Love/Hate' Series 3 DVDs sold or revenues generated from the sales "as this could prove prejudicial to its ability to operate within commercial markets".
Revenues at the firm, which operates the RTE Player, sells RTE TV shows overseas and publishes the 'RTE Guide', last year decreased marginally from €21.72m to €21.7m.
