Legal battle with rival pushes McCambridge into the red

Gordon Deegan

Legal costs associated with its long-running High Court case over bread packaging contributed to pushing McCambridge into the red last year.

According to accounts just filed by McCambridge Ltd, they confirm that the bread company recorded a loss of €682,361 in the 12 months to the end of June 25 last following the Dublin firm recording a pre-tax profit of €124,252 in 2010.

Last November, McCambridges won a High Court case against rival Brennans over the packaging used for a brown bread product.

Brennans have appealed the High Court injunction to the Supreme Court with the case due to be heard shortly.

Abridged accounts filed by the UK-owned McCambridge show that under an 'exceptional item' McCambridge's provided for €265,000 in legal costs last year and it is understood that the vast majority of the costs relate to the Brennan case.
