Government agrees new deal with owners
SOME 650 workers at Tara Mines can breath easier after the firm’s owners agreed a new deal with the government that will secure their jobs.
Both sides have settled on the terms to allow a substantial underground extension of the mine which will facilitiate another 10 years of mining of lead and zinc at the facility outside Navan in Meath. .
Earlier this year staff at the mine had been placed on protective notice as the firm tried to reduce costs.
In March, there was an agreement reached that will see overtime costs reduced, some early retirements and a €110m investment in the plant.
