Irish box- office takings plummet
THE Smurfs may be coming but it probably won't prevent the Irish box office from suffering an underwhelming summer.
After peaking at 18.4 million in 2007, cinema attendance has fallen for three consecutive years, with figures for the first six months of 2011 showing a further year-on-year drop of 4.7 per cent.
Despite the success of Bridesmaids and Harry Potter, no film has yet topped the €4m mark this year and the industry is facing lowest admission figures in a decade.
Weakness at the box office has been attributed to a variety of ills including 3D "fatigue", low discretionary spending and, of course, poor films on display.
