Inflation up 1.8pc in year ended May, unchanged on month

INFLATION was up 1.8pc on an annual basis in May, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office.

On a monthly basis, the figure was unchanged.

According to the CSO, on an annual basis there were increases in the price of education and transport and drops in the cost of furnishings and household equipment.

On a monthly basis, the price of alcoholic beverages increases because of a recovery in prices for wine sold in off licences and supermarkets following the end

of special offers.

The cost of transport fell mainly due to decreases in petrol and diesel prices.
