INDEPENDENT.ie has cemented its position as Ireland's number one online news publishing site with 9 million unique users last month.

Independent News and Media's Irish online news portal also reached half a billion page impressions in eight months since January.

Fiona O'Carroll, managing director at Independent.ie, said it was an exciting time for the website and its readers.

"We want to thank them for helping us to reach this major milestone. In the last 12 months we have doubled our audience and in July alone we recorded 9.1 million unique users.

"Independent.ie continues to set the standard for quality online news journalism and these figures clearly demonstrate we are now Ireland's number one online news publishing site and the 'go to' source for breaking news from business, sport, life, style and entertainment news," Ms O'Carroll said.

She added that Independent.ie was now a significant employer in the INM Group and has ambitious growth plans to build on its current staff of 40 and to recruit further. Additional traffic figures show readers are obtaining news from Independent.ie consistently throughout the day, with peak access to online content beginning at 8.30am. Additional figures show that 45pc of readers are accessing content via mobile devices, showing significant year-on-year growth of 200pc.

User traffic data also shows that 67pc of those accessing content are from within Ireland.

"We are seeing a shift towards readers consuming our top stories via mobile. Over 750,000 readers viewed our top story on Nek-nomination in February, with 70pc accessing the story via a mobile device. Human interest stories are topping the list as well," Ms O'Carroll said.
