In brief: O'Brien raises INM stake to 26pc

Telecoms entrepreneur Denis O'Brien has confirmed that he raised his stake in Independent News & Media to more than 26pc. Mr O'Brien's vehicles acquired additional shares in the publisher earlier this week.

Fitzpatrick plans new €50m hotel

Irish hotelier Paul Fitzpatrick, who owns the Morgan and Beacon hotels in Dublin, is to spend £40m (€51m) building a new boutique premises in Edinburgh. The hotel is expected to open by the end of 2010 and employ 100 people.

Bitbuzz increases user base by 15pc

Irish telecoms group Bitbuzz said its number of registered users rose 15pc quarter-on-quarter to 113,478. The company provides internet access via 173 Wi-Fi hotspots.

Norway slashes interest rate 0.5pc

Norway's central bank has cut the country's interest rate by 0.5pc, to 4.75pc, in an attempt to stave off a severe economic downturn. The country, which relies heavily on oil revenue, has been hit by oil price falls.

Belfast tech outfit in €300,000 deal

The Belfast subsidiary of the global healthcare corporation Philips Healthcare, has won a £300,000 contract to supply cardiac management software to the Arabian Gulf following an Invest Northern Ireland trade mission. The Belfast company, previously known as Tomcat Systems, will install its software at the Zayed Military Hospital in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Deloitte 'Fast 50' award for Novosco

Novosco, a provider of virtual infrastructure has been awarded a ranking in the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 Awards, Ireland for the ninth consecutive year.

US durable goods orders up 0.8pc

New orders for long-lasting manufactured goods in the US rose unexpectedly in September on rebounding demand for aircraft and autos. Orders for durable goods, intended to last three years or more, rose 0.8pc.
