'I'm just shocked more than anything else'
Lufthansa's plant in Rathcoole, Co Dublin, has been involved in aircraft engine maintenance for more than 30 years.
Many of the staff leaving the plant yesterday were too upset to comment on the shock announcement.
However, 27-year veteran of the company John Woods said that he was shocked to learn about the decision and that there was no advanced notice.
"It's been a strong company for a lot of years.
"Lack of engines, the engine overhaul business has changed over the years, manufacturers are giving service guarantees rather than sending them out to MROs like us," he said about the company's explanation for its decision.
"They have left the door slightly ajar as regards negotiations and maybe pay and conditions, that's all I can tell you."
He said that he had a daughter at home and that the timing of the announcement, around Christmas, was terrible.
His colleague, Ciaran Mulholland, said he's not optimistic that the company will decide to remain when it makes its final decision in 30 days time.
"I'm just shocked more than anything else, just shocked," he said.
"Obviously I'd like to be optimistic, but I don't think it's going to happen," he said.
