IDA and Enterprise Ireland overseas offices bill tops €38m
The overseas offices operated by Enterprise Ireland (EI) and the IDA cost €38.8m to operate last year.
New figures provided by the Tánaiste and Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Enterprise, Frances Fitzgerald show that the EI office in London - with Brexit looming - was the costliest to operate, at €2.7m in 2016.
The total bill - that is made up of capital and operating costs - for the operation of EI's global network of offices totalled €22.9m last year.
The cost of operating IDA's overseas offices totalled €15.9m for the same period.
In figures provided to Deputy Niall Collins (FF) in a Dáil reply, Minister Fitzgerald said that the costs of New York City EI office were the second highest at €2.64m. Ten personnel are employed at that office.
The figures show that four EI offices each cost more than €1m to operate.
They consist of Shanghai - €1.4m; Dusseldorf - €1.3m; Dubai - €1.3m; and Mountain View in California - €1.1m.
EI employ 147 staff overseas and the largest number is located in London at 14.
The figures show that along with the €1.3m spend on the Dubai office last year where seven are employed, EI spent an additional €482,123 on its Riyadh office in Saudi Arabia where three are employed.
In her written response, Minister Fitzgerald said: "Enterprise Ireland's overseas structure, through its network of 32 overseas offices and its extended Pathfinder network, provides client companies with access to incubation and hot-desking facilities, local market knowledge on a sectoral basis, introductions to buyers/suppliers/partners, and market intelligence such as competitor analysis, identification of professional services etc."
In a separate Dáil reply to Deputy Collins, Minister Fitzgerald said that the staff costs of the IDA overseas network totalled €10.8m for 2016 and non-staff costs totalled €5.17m. The IDA employs 73 overseas with the highest amount employed at its New York City office, while eight are employed at its Mountain View office in California.
The IDA does not provide information in relation to the specific cost breakdown of individual offices.
