Here comes the 'twosie' as buyers return
Penney's is betting big that the fashion must-have this winter will be the... 'twosie'.
While the likes of One Direction, Jessie J and even Brad Pitt helped make the 'onesie' the clothing phenomenon of the last year, sharp high street fashion retailers Penneys feel the 'twosie' - an overgrown babygro for two people - is the next step.
"We will have our most exciting, best-value Christmas range ever," Primark director Breege O'Donoghue told the Sunday Independent.
"We think Twosies will be popular, along with this season's Christmas jumpers."
Last week, her views on the twosie were echoed by George Weston, chief executive of ABF, which owns Penneys, who also predicted that this year would be about "the twosie, not the onesie" and said that Christmas jumpers would be "more in your face".
The recent mild weather has hit some lines Weston added. "Some of the ranges are selling really well, we've got the fashion absolutely right. Denim is absolutely flying. Gloves and hats are not," he said.
The improving economy and rising consumer confidence has seen retailers crawl out of their bunkers in recent months, with some predicting this autumn and Christmas will be the best selling season since the boom.
"We are quite bullish about the upcoming Christmas trading period, everything feels right for a solid Christmas," said Harvey Norman boss Blaine Callard.
"We're certainly feeling a pickup in consumer confidence and interest, specifically around tech products like tablets, Apple, and multi-room audio, small kitchen appliances and home furnishing."
