Greencore said yesterday that it plans to close facilities in Newburyport and Brockton, Massachusetts by September 2015.

Dublin-based Greencore will build a new sandwich manufacturing facility Quonset in Rhode Island.

The new factory will be located to allow Greencore to service existing markets in New England and develop future business opportunities closer to New York.

The site will be over 100,000 square feet with a modular design that will enable future expansion, the company said.

The new site will employ 370 people when it opens next spring. Employees at the existing sites will be offered the opportunity to take up roles at the new facility. The cost of construction and fit-out will be £20m (€23.8m) and will be incurred over the next 15 months, Greencore said. Other costs, which will be reported as exceptional items this financial year, will include £8m (€9.5m) to close the Newburyport and Brockton sites and start-up costs estimated at £3m (€3.5m).

"This investment will significantly enhance our capability and capacity to serve the sandwich market in the North Eastern region of the US, and will also enable us to drive further growth with current customers," said Greencore chief executive Patrick Coveney.
