Greencore in US product recall
THE American division of Greencore has had one of its products recalled amid a food- poisoning scare.
Thorntons, a Kentucky-based convenience store chain, recalled a ready-made salad supplied by Greencore USA in Ohio, after salmonella was found in grape tomatoes similar to those used by the Irish company.
The value of the products recalled is believed to be quite small, but the recall notice for the "Chef Salad" covers much of the Midwest region of the States, with the notice being enacted from Chicago in the north to Nashville in the south.
The US Food and Drug Administration said there have been no reports of illnesses so far but tests discovered salmonella in the grapes.
The Kentucky-based Thorntons is a privately held chain of more than 160 fuel and convenience stores that generate more than $1.4bn (€1.05bn) in revenue.
Greencore has long coveted a larger share of the US market, and has been working to get a foothold in the country for sometime.
Last year the Irish company bought the Massachusetts based "On A Roll" sandwich business.
