Chadwicks and Heiton Buckley operator Grafton Merchanting has joined the Irish Green Building Council (IGBC).

Established in 2011, the charity aims to transform the built environment into one that is sustainable.

Grafton Merchanting is the first reseller to join the IGBC. In addition to working with the charity, Grafton Merchanting has put several initiatives in place to help reduce waste, use more sustainable materials, and reduce energy use.

As part of its sustainability agenda, over 90pc of Grafton Merchanting branches have now switched to environmentally friendly LED lighting and, when combined with movement and light sensors, this has reduced energy usage by around 30pc, the group said.

It is also working with suppliers to look at how packaging can be reduced.

Grafton Merchanting CEO Patrick Atkinson said it is looking forward to working with the IGBC and its partners to help realise its vision of a sustainable built environment.
