Bord Gáis Energy has dropped its prices for both electricity and gas again for the third time in under two years, the company has said.

The firm will reduce its electricity unit price by 5pc while its gas unit rate is to fall by 2.5pc with the changes in pricing set to take effect from October 1 of this year.

Bord Gáis said the reductions will save its average dual fuel household €67 per year.

The drop in prices follows the news that Irish wholesale gas prices fell by 35pc in August.

Bord Gáis managing director Dave Kirwan said the firm is looking to help its customers keep costs down.

"For most of the past five years our customers have paid the lowest standard electricity and dual fuel unit rates in Ireland and today’s announcement means they will continue to do so this winter.  We can’t control every part of the cost of energy but we promise to do our bit to lower prices when we can.”
