Room rates in four and five-star hotels have experienced a significant drop in prices, according to the latest Hotel Price Index.

Vancouver saw the biggest fall in five-star hotel rates in 2012, with prices down by a quarter to an average €223 per person per night.

Other big fallers in the year included Delhi, which slid 15pc to €161, while Marrakech tumbled 12pc to €94 and Washington DC was down 11pc to €248.

One of the most popular destinations for Irish travellers, New York, saw visitors pay 7pc less for their five-star accommoda- tion.

New York rates in 2012 averaged €416.

Dublin remained somewhat immune to the trend and prices in the sector remained strong.

Dublin prices compare relatively well with other developed cities, with the average four-star hotel room costing €94 and a five-star hotel room costing €177 in 2012.
