German poll sees bright future for finance minister
THE hotly anticipated German election has ended and Angela Merkel has returned to the top post.
But what of her cabinet? A poll has shown that nearly three in four Germans want Wolfgang Schaeuble to stay on as finance minister in the future government, so taken were they with his performance to date.
This left The Punt wondering what the percentage might be for our own finance minister.
Despite the criticism in some quarters, Michael Noonan is hugely respected internationally and his command of the finance brief is impressive.
Would we want him back in the post, or would the electorate like a change of blood, and maybe even a change of party? Finance Minister Pearse Doherty or Finance Minister Michael McGrath perhaps?
The German poll also raises the possibility that perhaps the electorate have made their peace with austerity-pushing politicians as they have a better grasp of the challenges being faced.
Or more likely it's simply a case of better the devil you know.
Either way, we've a few more years left to mull over our feelings for Mr Noonan.
Unless Fine Gael and Labour have an irreversible falling out, of course.
