Gem Plastics in return to profit

INDUSTRIAL container manufacturer Gem Plastics surged back to profit last year after completing an "extensive restructuring". The Regaskin, Co Cavan-based firm posted a profit for the year to December 31, 2011, of €429,748 on the back of revenue of €24.7m. That was well up on a year earlier, when Gem lost more than €553,000.

Varadkar examines Shannon options


THE Department of Transport is working through the books and the mechanism by which Shannon airport can exit the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA). Yesterday, Leo Varadkar said the option put forward by Booz consultants on Shannon securing its independence from the DAA with an input from the private sector was the option he was in favour of. On Clare FM, Mr Varadkar said an Irish Financial Services Centre model at Shannon "might be the way to go".
