Equinix customers will now be able to connect on demand to any other customer from any Equinix location around the world.

The data centre firm has announced the physical and virtual connection of all its International Business Exchange (IBX) centres across the globe.

Participating firms are expected to benefit by rapidly scaling their digital business operations globally through a private and secure connection to a wider range of business partners and destinations - and also have the capability to customise their connectivity through an interface that provides "as-a-service" benefits.

More than 1,000 participants are currently on ECX Fabric, including some of the world’s largest enterprises such as Caterpillar, Citi and Walmart, cloud service providers such as  Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform, IBM Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud and SaaS providers including Salesforce, SAP and ServiceNow.

Chief Marketing Officer Sara Baack said that, as digital transformation intensifies, "business possibilities have no limits and neither should an organisation’s IT infrastructure".

"Building a digital business requires the ability to reach strategic global destinations on demand, to access everyone that matters, and to bring people, clouds, data and things together," she said.

This new integration will be delivered through the Equinix Cloud Exchange (ECX) - renamed the Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric - which will leverage the existing in-built software-defined networking (SDN) capabilities.

Since the arrival of Equinix in Ireland last year, businesses with data hosted in Ireland have been able to interconnect with global enterprises in more than 41 markets using the ultra-high-speed interconnection platform.

Equinix has invested more than €18.5m in expanding and improving its Irish data centre sites and rolling out more advanced business solutions following its acquisition of TelecityGroup in 2016.

The new capabilities are immediately available in all ECX locations in North America and the EMEA regions, including Amsterdam, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Dublin, Frankfurt, London, Los Angeles, Manchester, New York, Paris, São Paulo, Seattle, Silicon Valley, Stockholm, Toronto, Washington, D.C. and Zurich.

ECX Fabric will roll out to seven new metros in North America and Europe including Denver, Dusseldorf, Geneva, Helsinki, Miami, Milan and Munich from the end of next year. Connectivity will be extended between metros to APAC ECX Fabric locations such as Hong Kong, Melbourne, Osaka, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo in 2018.
