Dunnes seals acquisition of Cafe Sol chain in the capital

The acquisition of the Café Sol chain by Dunnes Stores has been approved by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

"The Commission has formed the view that the proposed transaction will not substantially lessen competition in any market for goods or services in the State," the watchdog said.

Café Sol operates in the Dublin area and also owns the Baxter & Greene brand.

It also operates the Neon Asian restaurant on Dublin's Camden Street.

Café Sol has eight outlets in the capital, all of them in the city centre. One of the outlets is located in the Mater Hospital.

The business was founded in 1998 and was owned by Ciaran Daly and Jennifer Sheehan.

The latest set of accounts for Café Sol show that it made a loss of €710,000 in the 12 months to the end of March 2015.

During the boom, Café Sol had 11 outlets and was generating significant profits.

It posted a €900,000 profit in the 12 months to March 2007, double the amount it made in the previous financial year.
