Sunday 17 December 2017 experiences 34pc increase in traffic

New figures released by Tourism Ireland show that visits to websites last year surpassed 13 million, a 34pc increase in the organisation’s web activity over 2008.

Brian Harte, Tourism Ireland’s head of e-marketing, said: “Tourism Ireland has increased its digital marketing activity across the world and we now invest approximately 27pc of our total marketing budget online. We are also continually enhancing our website to increase its effectiveness in marketing the island of Ireland as a premier holiday destination and as a platform to help our industry partners ‘close the sale’.

“While the global economic downturn has certainly impacted on Irish tourism, this record number of visits is most encouraging and illustrates a continued strong interest in the island of Ireland, despite the challenging environment”, Harte said.

With 41 different websites, provides information to potential holidaymakers around the world in 19 different languages, covering every continent. It features information mined from a database of approximately 30,000 tourism products including accommodation, festivals, activities, attractions and events. Information is updated on a daily basis, ensuring it is an extremely dynamic and comprehensive source of information for overseas tourists. in 2009

- The German site performed particularly well, experiencing growth of +49pc. Tourism Ireland’s recent review of the German market has shown that it represents a strong growth opportunity for tourism to Ireland.

- Returning visitors increased particularly in December, mainly due to online Advent Calendar campaigns undertaken by Tourism Ireland across mainland Europe.
