Joanne Hynes, the Galway-born designer, has been picked as Ireland's representative at Ukrainian Fashion Week in Kiev this March.

Hynes is one of 16 fashion designers being showcased at the event -- one from each of the countries competing in the 2012 European Football Championship which is co-hosted by the Ukraine.

"Export is crucial for Irish designers," Hynes said, "It's the backbone of my business and accounts for 85 per cent of sales."

Hynes sells her clothing and accessories ranges in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East and she hopes to use the event to develop a presence in the Ukraine and Russia.

"I think it is difficult to survive without international presence and sales channels," Hynes said. "Growing internationally is challenging but once a designer knows their product and strength it will grow from there."

Hynes' new collection is currently being stocked in Brown Thomas in Dublin and Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, London.
