Irish spatial analytics firm Compass Informatics has struck a strategic partnership deal with UK big data firm Citi Logik to develop a new advanced location analytics business in Ireland.

The two companies are jointly developing technology that can track and analyse in real time the movement of people and vehicles through anonymous and aggregated data from mobile phones.

Compass Informatics managing director Gearóid Ó Riain said that the technology would initially be aimed at transport authorities and city councils and could see the creation of up to 50 new research and development jobs. The partnership would lead to the development of a €5m to €10m Irish-based business but would also provide a base for international opportunities, said Ó Riain.

"Our collaborative efforts working with anonymised network data for public good offers the potential to help reduce congestion, improve traffic flows and understand the impact of pollution. Compass Informatics is particularly excited to deepen our working relationship with Citi Logik to develop solutions relevant to Ireland, to other European cities and internationally," he said.

A pilot project underway with Dublin City Council will track the movement of people and vehicles between the city's canals to analyse journey patterns. A UK project is creating a system to show how full individual trains are and could allow passengers plan more comfortable journeys.

Citi Logik MD Stephen Leece said his company had already worked extensively with Compass over the last three years on major projects across the UK and that the partnership was a natural next step. He said the deal would involve advanced real-time capabilities and "the prospect of developing world leading capability derived from the local 3/4/5G network across the island of Ireland".
