Centra is to create 400 jobs across 30 new stores as part of a €30m investment.

The retail chain has opened eight of the stores, with further openings throughout the country planned for the remainder of the year.

The convenience food store said that the investment was another part of an expansion of its healthy convenience offering following its brand repositioning two years ago.

Since refreshing the Centra brand in 2016, the retailer said it has adopted a healthier, more innovative product offering.

"We are well-positioned for the future with plans to open a further 30 Centra stores in 2018, highlighting the attractiveness of the Centra brand to independent retailers," said Centra MD Martin Kelleher.

"Our performance is ultimately testament to the efforts of our retail partners who live the brand every day and deliver a tailored offer to the local community."

The group is also working on the introduction of digital solutions including the Beat the Queue app.

The app will enable lunch-break shoppers to pre-order their sandwiches and avoid waiting.

The Beat the Queue service will be introduced to over 100 Centra stores in 2018.

In the past year Centra has seen sales of its Grab & Go sandwich range rose by almost a quarter.

Meanwhile the Frank and Honest coffee brand also performed strongly last year, contributing to the group doubling its sales in the hot beverages category, Centra said.
