Celebrity chef's fishy chippie hooks an extra €150,000 profit
TV CELEBRITY chef Martin Shanahan last year hauled in a large catch of profits as 80,000 customers flocked to his award-winning Fishy Fishy Cafe in Kinsale.
New accounts for the business and Mr Shanahan's Fishy Fish Shop & Chippie in the gourmet east Cork town show that accumulated profits increased last year by €150,503.
The new filings for Mr Shanahan's Kinsale Gourmet Store Ltd show that its accumulated profits last year increased from €814,770 to €965,273.
One of two chefs to front RTE's recent 'Surf and Turf' TV show that had an average audience of 271,800 viewers, Mr Shanahan said he is "happy" with how the business has performed.
"Last year, we had more customers than in 2010, but the average spend per customer was down and they weren't going for the gin & tonic before dinner or an Irish coffee after their meal so that affected the spend."
Mr Shanahan, who runs the business with his wife, Marie, said that last year, 80,000 customers came to Fishy Fishy comparing to 72,000/73,000 in 2010.
The food writer said 2012 would be on par with last year. "Month by month, to the end of September this year has been on a par with last, but October has seen a dip."
He said the wage bill for the business last year was just short of €1m. In peak season, 50 are employed at the business; this drops to 26 during the winter.
The firm's profits last year were not as high in 2010 -- abridged accounts for 2010 show that accumulated profits increased by €265,509 from €614,637 to €880,146.
Mr Shanahan established Fishy Fishy in 2006 and it today has capacity for 140 customers with seating for 90 inside and 50 outside.
