Irish drinks company C&C has expanded its beer portfolio by becoming the exclusive distributor of Corona and Corona Light in Ireland, through its Gleeson Group arm.

The Bulmers maker already distributes Stella Artois and Brahma.

“Corona leads the ‘Sunshine Beer’ category around the world and is a brand we have always coveted, so it’s a particularly welcome addition to our business,” C&C Gleeson brand manager Laura Faulkner said.

In terms of growing the C&C Gleeson business, acquiring exclusive distribution rights to Corona presents a fantastic opportunity for us to expand our trade reach, offering customers across the island of Ireland an extended collection of some of the most popular drinks brands not only in Ireland, but globally.

“Corona will be our second biggest brand, in terms of scale, behind the flagship Bulmers cider brand.”

C&C shares were up 1.4pc at lunchtime.

The company has had a rocky few months after a takeover of UK pub group Spirit was rejected and trading in the three months to the end of November was below expectations.

In the US. where C&C distributes Woodchuck cider, sales volumes declined 16.2pc in the period.

But C&C said the US cider market “remains very attractive”.

“The group is firmly committed to capitalising on the long-term growth potential,” it said.

The company also said trading in the Christmas period was worse than expected.
