THIS is one small coin you will not want to get lost in the depths of your pocket.

The Central Bank yesterday issued a special edition €20 collector's coin which ranks as one of the smallest in the world.

Measuring just 11mm in diameter and weighing 0.5g, the coin features a Celtic high cross beside an Irish round tower.

It is the latest work of the artist Thomas Ryan, who also designed the 1990 £1 coin featuring a red deer and the 1988 Dublin Millennium 50p coin.

"The Celtic high cross holds a significant place in our heritage with many of these monuments dating back as far as the eighth century," Mary O'Dea, director of financial operations at the Central Bank, said.

"Today is an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural and Christian heritage associated with these monuments and the Central Bank of Ireland is delighted to pay tribute to Ireland's magnificent high crosses with the issue of this very special €20 coin."

A total of 12,000 editions of the coin are being released costing €40 each and will be presented in a special case.
