BWG, the wholesale group behind the Spar chain, has bought Galway-based distribution company Tolan Foodservice.

The company, headed by businessman Martin Tolan, was established in 1996 and has a turnover of over ?20m.

The group has 49 staff, who will remain in place with management to develop the business.

The company distributes dry and chilled groceries to guesthouses, pubs and hotels.

Tolan Foodservice supplies outlets nationally and distributes "multi temperature" goods.

After the completion of the deal, Martin Tolan said: "We believe that joining forces with BWG will create a bigger and better entity allowing us to further grow and develop as major operators in the wholesale foodservice sector."

BWG would not disclose how much it paid for the firm but said the company had been growing rapidly in recent years.

It is understood it has bought the business and goodwill, but has not purchased Tolan Distribution.

Accounts for the year ending January 2001 for Tolan Distribution show the company had a gross profit of IR£2.2m, while it had a pre-tax profit of IR£6,318.

Directors Martin and Sheila Tolan received total emoluments of £47,000.
