State owned AIB has selected Bernard Byrne, the bank’s head of retail and business banking, to take over as chief executive officer, according to the Bloomberg newswire.

The former ESB finance director joined AIB in 2010. He took over as President of the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) earlier this year, when outgoing AIB chief David Duffy stepped down.

The bank and the department of finance declined to comment on the appointment, which is not yet official and is subject to European Central Bank approval.

Bernard Byrne has long been tipped as the favourite to take the top job at the bank, which will involve leading the re-privatisation of AIB over the coming years
