Picture a train rushing through a mountain valley with a full moon in the background and you're into the minds of four talented young Dublin men.

The men, Daniel Spencer, Sean Mullen, Alex Sherwood and Ben Harper, are behind the animated short movie, The Last Train. The animation, which tells the story of a man being chased by a monster on a train, was nominated for an Ifta award in early 2012 – around the same time that the men, who studied animation in Ballyfermot College of Further Education, decided to set up their own animation company, Giant Creative.

"We set up the company because we felt there was a demand for the quality of 3D animation that we were producing," said Mr Spencer, the firm's managing director.

The company is currently producing a short animation film based on a story by the British author Terry Pratchett, and it expects to finish this film by the end of September. Giant Creative also recently won some funding from the Irish Film Board to create its own animation.

"This animation will be a bit of a thriller," explained Mr Spencer.

The company expects to make money by selling animations and merchandising.

There is big demand for Irish animation from international publishers, broadcasters and games companies, according to Mr Spencer.
