The Co Wicklow studio where hit series Vikings is shot has made a fresh bid for a €90m expansion that will create 1,500 movie-related jobs.

New plans have been lodged by Joe and Shelley O'Connell's Ashford Studios with Wicklow Co Council for phase two of their firm studio plan.

The €90m expansion includes four new film studios of 40,000 sq ft each, a TV studio, offices and support space. There are also plans for a visitor centre in a bid to underpin the area's development of a TV and film skills cluster. The promoters hope that the visitor centre will attract 100,000 visitors each year.

The firm lodged plans for phase two last May. However, Wicklow County Council sought further information and Ashford Studio has withdrawn the original plan and lodged new plans.
