Arrah, embracing arts 'a sound investment'

THE vast majority of Irish business leaders believe that the State should continue subsidising the arts, with 73 per cent saying that taxpayers' money invested in the arts is well spent.

But while the Government spent €68m on the arts in 2010, artists themselves have to survive on a pittance, with an average yearly income from their work of just €14,676.

However, there's money in the arts for administrators -- the Arts Council is currently advertising for a new director with an annual salary of up to €97,417 per annum, as well as free entry to as many exhibitions, plays and performances as they want.
