FF TD ‘not sure’ bank guarantee was right decision
A FIANNA Fail TD says he is not sure his party was right to introduce the bank guarantee in September 2008.
Donegal North East deputy Charlie McConalogue also says a full banking inquiry is needed to establish if the Fianna Fáil-Green coalition was duped into introducing the blanket guarantee.
"I think that's what needs to be found out," he said, adding there were very serious questions and evidence arising from the Anglo tapes. He also said it was hard to believe ministers were not aware of the existence of the tapes.
"I find it hard to believe that we see the Tanaiste today and the Minister for Finance indicate they were not aware the tapes existed," Mr McConalogue said.
On the guarantee, he said: "Most of the parties voted for it at the time or subsequently."
Asked if the guarantee was the right decision, he said: "My view is I can't be sure in hindsight. I think it's a very, very difficult question to answer.
"What we need to know is if the Government were duped at the time."
