All change at top as United Drug targets expansion

THE times they are a-changin' at United Drug, and the company's top team is being formulated accordingly. Days after it announced the appointment of new board member Lisa Ricciardi, the healthcare services company has appointed a new chief operations officer. Brendan McAtamney joins the Irish-headquartered business from Abbott Laboratories, where he has worked for the last 17 years.

The management addition comes at a time of expansion for the company. It recently left the Irish Stock Exchange and is now listed in London. Shares have risen by one-third in the past year alone. It is rebranding as UDG Healthcare in September, with the new trading name acting as an umbrella for the group's growing number of subsidiaries, though United Drug will remain the name for the group's wholesale drug business.

Executives are trying to position the company as a healthcare business rather than a retail one.

The company's chief executive Liam Fitzgerald specifically mentioned the company's plans to expand and internationalise when announcing Mr McAtamney's appointment.
