AIB brings online banking war to the wrist
AIB has built an online banking app for the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 watch and other smartwatch devices.
The app, which is still undergoing testing, allows users to check their balance, find ATMs and call AIB via smartwatch. It is being piloted at AIB's Learn About Banking facility in the Dundrum Town Centre.
Fergal Coburn, AIB's head of direct channels said: "Most leading commentators in the emerging technology space are saying that 'wearable' technology will be big in the future across all aspects of our lives from monitoring our health to guiding our purchases - for this reason AIB wants to know what our customers think of 'wearable' and more specifically how would they like to see AIB leverage 'wearable' to deliver exceptional customer experiences for them."
Irish banks are ploughing money into their online banking facilities. Ulster Bank recently rolled out fingerprint recognition technology to enhance security on its app.
AIB sees technology companies like Facebook, Paypal, Netflix and Google as competitors as much as retail banks, head of corporate strategy Enda Johnson said this week. "These are global organisations with access across many markets, and they have payment ambitions" he said.
