Enterprise Ireland has launched a €500,000 entrepreneurial fund aimed at kickstarting 10 female-led Irish export businesses.

The 'Competitive Start Fund for Female Entrepreneurs' targets women who have already developed a business plan and followed through on the feasibility stage and who now need a hard cash investment to launch their businesses.

Apart from a €50,000 seed equity investment for each of the 10 successful new women business leader applicants, the initiative will also allow them to tap into the advice, support and back-up that Enterprise Ireland provides. The fund is open to new female-led companies aged from inception to two years old.

Jean O'Sullivan, manager of female entrepreneurship with Enterprise Ireland, said: "What we have found is that our funds have been 90pc given to businesses led by men, probably because female entrepreneurs don't have the confidence to come forward. With this new fund, what we're saying to female entrepreneurs is: "Stand up and identify yourselves!"

The fund will be open for applications from today until December 3.
