100 MBNA jobs to go in Carrick-on-Shannon reporters

THE Bank of America has announced the loss of 100 jobs at MBNA, its credit card division in Co Leitrim.

The Carrick on Shannon-based company said that where possible, the reductions would be made through voluntary redundancy.

In August the bank said that it was selling its credit card business in Ireland and the UK, which could have meant the loss of 750 jobs..

But today the bank announced that a total of 250 jobs are to be lost across the European card business.

A 100 of these positions will be in Carrick on Shannon and 150 in the UK

Bank of America's Ian O'Doherty said while difficult, these cuts are vital.

It is understood negotiations are continuing to find a suitable buyer for the MBNA business.

This is regarded as necessary to secure the remaining 650 jobs in Carrick.
