An interesting Wicklow holding extending to 98ac of forestry belonging to Coillte has recently come on the market.

Although under Christmas trees for the last 20 years, the sale is aimed at the mainstream farming market and the forestry sector as the place comes to auction with a guide price of €6,000/ac.

Located at Ballard, Ballinaclash near Rathdrum in Co Wicklow the property is in two separate lots of 36ac and 62ac located 500m apart.

The land has been cleared of Christmas trees with only the stumps remaining. According to auctioneer David Quinn there is no stipulation that a new owner should plant trees on the ground, it is up to the successful purchaser to do what he or she sees fit.

"The removal of the tree stumps isn't a complicated operation," said Mr Quinn, "and with little enough effort this farm could revert to tillage or grass."

According to the auctioneer local people remember the ground being under tillage at one stage in its history.

The land is described as good, free draining ground of good quality with good road frontage and serviced throughout by a number of internal roadways.

Mr Quinn has had a lot of pre auction enquiries with a mix of interest from local farmers and from people with an interest in continuing the Christmas tree production.

The auctioneer believes the farm will be sold in two separate lots as most of the interest and the enquiries refer to the smaller parcels.

The property comes to auction at the Woodenbridge Hotel, Avoca, Co Wicklow at 3pm on Wednesday, July 29.
