Weanling heifers suffer in testing week

Continental steers up to 500kg enjoyed a good week at the marts but thereafter it was a mixed bag with the heavy weanling heifer probably faring the worst and in some cases were back by up to 16c/kg.

Light continental steers were selling for €2.20-2.70/kg. The 400-500kg types moved at €2.10-2.50/kg. Heavier lots made from €2.00 to €2.40/kg.

Friesian bullocks generally sold for €1.20-1.70/kg, while the Angus and Herefords made from €1.70/kg to €2.10/kg. Heifers were back by 2-10c/kg, with prices of €2.10-2.40/kg buying the majority of the continentals.

The over 600kg lots were a very sluggish trade making €1.90-2.25/kg. Weanling bulls varied from €2.10 to €2.60/kg, with some better light bulls making €2.90-3.00/kg. Plain bulls sold for €1.50-1.90/kg.

The weanling heifers up to 400kg were making €2.15-2.70/kg. Lots over this weight made €2.05-2.45/kg.

Poorer quality lots ranged from €1.80/kg to €1.95/kg. Dairy heifers are making €1,200-1,500 in the main, while older dairy cows are generally selling for between €900 and €1,250.

Trade was mixed for the 680 cattle on offer at Dowra Mart last Saturday. Heifers over 550kg were making €1.80-2.30/kg, while the 400-550kg lots made €1.80-2.50/kg. Weanling heifers sold for €1.70-2.75/kg.

A few light fancy lots made €2.80-3.30/kg. Bullocks over 600kg were selling for €1.80-2.30/kg, with the lighter stores making €1.70-2.45/kg. Weanling bulls more than 450kg made €1.80-65/kg.

Bulls under 450kg moved at €1.90-3.00/kg with a few top quality lots making up to €3.45/kg. Cull cows met with a slower trade with the best of the young fit cows making €1.60-1.90/kg. The older cows made €0.80-1.50/kg. The tops of the in-calf heifers ranged from €1,500 to €1,900, with lighter and plainer lots making €1,000-1,400 each.

Prices were strong for the good quality store bullocks around 500kg at Balla Mart. Heavy bullocks were making €700-1,100 with their weight or €1.48-2.73/kg, while lighter plainer types were making from €500-670 with the €1/kg or €1.28-2.91/kg.

Light heifers under 400kg were selling for €1.36-2.83/kg. Heavy heifers made from €1.53 to €2.67/kg. They had 900hd at their weanling sale. Light bulls less than 350kg sold at €500-650 with their weight or €1.43-3.55/kg.

Heavier bulls made up to €700 with the weight or €1.72-2.69/kg. The light heifers up to 350kg were selling for €1.11-3.55/kg or €400-625 with the €1/kg.

Heifers over this weight made from €500-700 with their weight or €2.03-2.56/kg.


Ballinakill reported a steady trade for the 400hd on offer, with fancy stores continuing to sell well but the increased numbers of plainer cattle for sale proved more difficult to sell. Heavy steers were making €1.85-2.35/kg.

Forward continental stores moved at €1.80-2.40/kg. Light stores made €1.75-2.45/kg. Beef heifers sold for €1.75-2.20/kg. Stores traded for €1.70-2.10/kg.

Weanling bulls sold for €1.65-2.00/kg, while the heifers made €1.60-2.00/kg. Cull cows ranged from €1.10/kg to €1.75/kg.

At Roscommon Mart, the weanling heifers were moving at €270-700 with their weight. The bulls were selling for €285-775 over the €1/kg. In-calf continental heifers sold for €1,400-1,780. Cows with a calf at foot made from €1,330 to €1,480.

Carnew had 350 weanlings on offer with a very strong trade for bull weanlings. Prices were up by €20/hd on the previous week at €350-920 with their weight.

The heifer weanlings were a steady trade and selling for €270-740 over the weight. They had 600hd at their cattle sale. Beef and forward store bullocks were selling for €650-950 over the weight. Lighter stores moved at €250-850 with the €1/kg.

Fleshed heifers made €550-910 with the weight, while the stores sold for €250-760 over.

Cull cows ranged from €100 under up to €840 over the weight. In-calf suckler heifers sold for €1,450-1,800, while cows with a calf at foot made €800-1,470/unit.

Continental steers more than 650kg at Tuam Mart were selling between €1.91/kg and €2.18/kg. Steers of 400-500kg made from €1.29/kg to €2.39/kg.

The 300-400kg types sold for €2.27-2.44/kg. Heifers over 500kg moved at €2.04-2.45/kg. Lots under 500kg made €2.42-2.59/kg. Weanling bulls were selling for €2.27-2.75/kg, while the 250-300kg heifers were making from €2.56-2.79/kg.

Heavier types made €2.31-2.78/kg. Cull cows sold for €1.62-2.12/kg.

Top class bulls more than 600kg made €460-815 over the weight in Raphoe. Store bullocks sold for €300-785 over.

Beef heifers were selling for €590-975 with the €1/kg, with the stores making €300-710 over the weight.

Cull cows ranged in price from €600 to €1,720.
