Weanling bulls and stores escape the worst of the general ease off in prices

The figures from ringside point to an easing of prices for the heavy steers and heavy weanling bulls as well as all the heifers. In contrast, forward store bullocks and the 300-400kg bulls improved somewhat.

In the main, the heavy continental steers were making €2.00-2.65/kg, with the best of the bulls hitting up to €3/kg. The majority were selling between €2.10/kg and €2.70/kg.

Kilkenny had a big sale of more than 1,000 cattle which was twice as big as the corresponding sale of 2012. Heifers met an excellent trade with a complete clearance. Beef and forward stores also sold very well. A special weanling sale saw bulls peak at €2.70/kg, with heifers hitting a high of €3.00/kg.

In general, the bulls ranged from €1.70/kg to €2.70/kg. Prices for heifer weanlings ran from €1.65/kg to €3.00/kg. Steers more than 500kg made €2.00-2.69/kg. The 400-500kg lots were selling from €1.85/kg to €2.78/kg, with the lighter types making €1.60-2.75/kg.

Heifers fit for slaughter made €1.70-2.47/kg. The stores sold for €2.00-2.60/kg. Suckler cows with a calf at foot were selling between €1,500 and €2,020. Continental cull cows ranged from €1.45/kg to €2.16/kg. Friesian culls made €1.10-1.80/kg.

Ballinakill had 400 cattle for sale. The beefy or plain cattle were steady. The store and fancy cattle were a very lively trade. Cull cows and all types of heifers were dearer by about €25/hd on the previous week. Heavy bullocks were selling at €2.10-2.52/kg. Forward stores sold for €1.90-2.60/kg. Light stores were making €1.85-2.70/kg.

The beef heifers ranged from €2.00/kg to €2.50/kg, with the stores moving at €1.75-2.30/kg. Weanling bulls varied from €1.80/kg to €2.40/kg. Heifer weanlings made €1.75-2.15/kg. Cull cows sold for €1.00-1.85/kg

Carnew had a large entry of 1,070 and reported a very strong selling trade with keen export demand for weanling bulls, which hit a high of €3.30/kg. Generally they sold for €400-1,050 over the €1/kg, while the weanling heifers made €350-700 over. Beef and forward bullocks were selling from €650 to €1,105 with their weight. Lighter stores moved at €210-950 over. Fleshed heifers were selling for €600-1,070 with the weight. Stores ranged from €280 to €800 over. Feeders sold back to €250 over.

Dowra Mart had 440 cattle on offer last Saturday. Trade continued very strong especially for the quality lots. Heifers more than 550kg made from €2.00-2.65/kg with the lighter stores making from €1.80-2.80/kg. Weanling heifers sold from €2.20-2.80/kg. A few top lots made more than €3.00/kg. Heavy weanling bulls more than 550kg made €2.00-2.40/kg. The lighter bulls were making €2.00-2.80/kg. Store bullocks sold from €1.80 to €2.80/kg. Good cull cows made €1.70-2.10/kg.

In Mountbellew, the weanling heifers met with a steady trade as numbers were up. Prices varied from €350 to €550 with the weight. Weanling bulls ranged from €400 to €600 with the weight.

Bullocks were selling for €2.21-2.95/kg over in Maam Cross. Heifers made €1.92-2.35/kg. Prices for the weanlings ranged from €1.80/kg to €2.38/kg. Suckler cows with a calf at foot sold for €1,080-1,250/unit. Cull cows sold for €1.45-1.80/kg.


Bullocks in the range 300-400kg at Ballymote Mart were making €350-635 over their weight. Lots of 400-500kg ranged from €420 to €650 over. The 500-600kg steers made from €450 to €635 over the €1/kg, while heavier lots sold up to €765 over.

The light heifers between 300kg and 400kg were making €320-585 over the weight. Heifers weighing 400-500kg made €380-725 over. Heavier lots topped out at €800 over. Suckler cows with a calf at foot ranged from €1,175 to €1,320.

Store-type cull cows were making €100-290 over the weight, with heavy lots making from €500 to €1,205 over. Weanling bulls under 300kg were selling for €250-600 over. Heavier types made €300-600 with their weight. Weanling heifers under 400kg made €280-435 over the weight. Top class bulls more than 600kg up in Raphoe were selling for €760-930 over the weight. Beef bullocks made from €675 to €1,030 over the €1/kg. Stores sold for €375-870 over. Beef heifers ranged from €500 to €835 over their weight. The stores made from €320 to €780 over. Cull cow prices ran from €700 to €2,350 each.

Down in Enniscorthy, the heavy steers made from €650 to €1,020 with their weight. Stores ranged from €450 to €980 over. Fleshed heifers were making €500-930 over the weight. Stores sold for €300-800 over.

Prices for bull weanlings ran from €700 to €1,120 or €480-860 with the weight. Heifer weanlings made €250-860 over the €1/kg. Fat cull cows were selling for €850-1,670/hd or €400-750 with the weight, while feeders made €100-350 over.

In the calf ring, continental bull calves sold for €250-480. The heifers made from €150-340.

Hereford and Angus bulls were making €170-340, with the heifers selling for €120-235. Friesian bull calves made €80-280.
