Weanling bull secures top price at Blessington

Martin Ryan

A top class Belgian Blue weanling bull, which weighed 480kgs sold for the highest price of the day at the Annual Weanling Show and Sale at Blessington Mart when the auctioneer's hammer fell at €1,360.

The bull weanling, which had been judged the best male animal at the show was exhibited by Norrie Fitzpatrick, Prosperous, Co Kildare and sold for €2.83/kg.

There was a good entry for the show at the popular Co Wicklow-based livestock mart operated by JP & M Doyle and the quality of animals was at least on par with previous years.

The principal beef breeds, Belgian Blue, Limousin and Charolais, shared the top awards in the show classes and all met with good competition at the sale which followed the judging.

The best single female at the show was a Limousin, exhibited by Seamus Sheeran, Maynooth.

The heifer weighed 430kgs and sold for €1,020.

Frank Byrne, Donadea exhibited the best group of three males. The Limousin bulls weighed 433kgs and sold for €1,100 each.

The best Group of three females were exhibited by Joseph Kelly, Dublin. The Charolais heifers averaged 393kgs and sold for €4,940 each.
