Weanling bull prices down 5-15c/kg

While demand at the marts was lively during the past week, it was most certainly constrained to a certain price bracket. Apart from heifers, most of the other categories endured a tough week, with steers, weanling bulls and weanling heifers all showing a drop in prices when compared to the previous week.

Prices for continental steers and weanling heifers fell by 2-7c/kg, while bull prices dropped by 5-15c/kg.

The majority of coloured steers sold for €2.00-2.60/kg with the heifers making €2.20-2.65/kg. Light continental bulls under 300kg sold for €2.00-3.00/kg with top lots making 310-320c/kg. Heavier types sold for €2.00-2.70/kg. Heifer weanlings up to 400kg sold for 220-300c/kg while heavier lots sold for 210-250c/kg.

Kilkenny Mart had 1,400hd of cattle for sale. Quality heifers sold well but light store heifers and some plain Friesian steers were a tad more difficult to move. Heavy continental steers and the best of the Friesian steers sold for€2.00-2.50/kg or €650-900 over the weight.

The 500-600kg steers sold for €1.85-2.55/kg with the lighter lots making from €1.50-2.96/kg. Factory heifers ranged from €2.00-2.75/kg. Butcher heifers sold for €2.00-2.35/kg. The stores sold for €1.80-2.95/kg or €300-520 with the €/kg. Continental cull cows ranged from €1.50-2.15/kg while the Friesians sold for €1.20-1.75/kg.

There were 560 cattle on offer in Ballinakill and enjoyed a lively trade. Quality bullocks and heifers met a flying trade due to a large attendance of buyers. The small plainer cattle were slightly easier. Heavy bullocks of 700-900kg sold for €2.10-2.50/kg.

Forward store continental steers sold for €2.00-2.60/kg. Light stores moved at €1.90-2.50/kg. Beef heifers sold for €1.90-2.45/kg. The stores sold from €1.65-2.40/kg. Weanling bulls sold for €1.90-2.45/kg. Weanling heifers sold for €1.60-2.30/kg.

Dowra had 870 cattle on offer last Saturday. Trade was very brisk for all classes. Heifers over 550kg sold for €2.00-2.55/kg with the lighter stores making €1.80-2.80/kg.Weanling heifers over 350kg sold for €1.70-2.80/kg.

Lighter bulls sold from €2.00-3.00/kg. Some top quality bulls sold for €3.00-3.50/kg. Store bullocks sold for €1.80-2.70/kg and heavy bullocks sold for €2.00-2.45/kg. Fit cull cows sold for €1.65-2.05/kg while feeding cows made €0.90-1.60/kg.


There were a large amount of heavy and finished cattle in the 1,300hd for sale at Balla Mart, where they sold for €800-1,000 with their weight or €1.30-2.90/kg. Lighter plainer types sold for €600-700 with the weights or €1.82-3.12/kg. Heifers were up slightly on the previous sale. Lighter lots under 400kg made €1.27-3.10/kg. Heavy heifers sold for €1.60-2.85/kg.

A two-year-old continental heifer due her first calf next month topped the suckler section at €1,850. In the cull cow section, an eight-year-old 850kg Charolais hit a high of €1,580.

There were more than 600 bulls and 400 heifers in the weanling sale, which saw light bulls under 350kg sell for €500-800 with the €/kg or €1.48-3.80/kg. Heavy bulls sold for €1.78-3.43/kg. The heifers up to 350kg sold for €1.47-3.37/kg. Heavier types sold for €500-650 with the weight or €1.92-2.69/kg.

Carnew had 1,100 on offer and reported a very strong export demand for quality Belgian Blues. Bulls sold for €380-1,000 over their weight, while heifers sold for €320-840 over.

Beef and forward stores sold for €650-1,050 with the €/kg. Lighter stores moved at €280-830 over the weight. Fleshed heifers sold for €500-1,000 over their weight. Stores sold for €250-750 over. Cull cows made €150-900 with the weight. In the calf ring, Friesian bulls sold for €80-150. Continental bull calves sold for €220-440 while the heifers sold for €150-380.

Suckler springers at Ballymote Mart sold for €1,050-1,360. Cull cows sold for €400-600 with their weight. Weanling bulls under 300kg moved at €300-685 with the €/kg.

Heavier lots sold for €350-835 over. The heifers up to 300kg sold for €280-560 over the weight, while the heavier types sold for €320-570 over. Heavy steers sold for €380-880 over the weight. Steers less than 400kg sold for €320-665 over.

Heifers more than 500kg sold for €470-1,030 with their weight. Light heifers sold for €320-665 over.

Top class bulls over 600 kg up in Raphoe sold for €655-995 over the weight. Beef bullocks sold for €680-870 with their weight. Stores sold for €300-908 over.

Beef heifers sold for €435-1,190 with the €/kg. Lighter heifers sold for €300-815 over.

Well-fleshed heavy continental cull cows sold for up to €2,280.

Cows for further feeding sold down to a low of €700/hd.
