Vets blast EU rabies changes

Vets have warned that amendments to EU regulations on the movement of cats and dogs has put Ireland's rabies-free status at risk.

A movement ban on rabies vaccinated animals has been shortened from seven months to three weeks, even though the incubation period for rabies can be six months.

Wicklow vet Alan Rossiter said a case of rabies in pups imported legally from Bulgaria to the Netherlands demonstrated that the new system had failed to detect and prevent rabies movement.
